Getting Error : FRM-40212 :Invalid value for field serial_number in contract subline

Trying to create a new service contract, but when entering the serial number in the contract subline, the following error is given: FRM-40212: Invalid value for field SERIAL_NUMBER. I have checked install base and the serial number belongs to the customer for which the contract is being created. Is there another place I need to check?
