How are Units handled when I add to an existing asset?

We use Mass Additions (12.1.3) to create assets from AP. 

I have an asset with 2 units and the following month I add an invoice with 1 unit to the same asset.  Does the total units for the asset change from 2 to 3?

Why or why not?

Is this the same behavior as in release 11? 

My users are telling me that it is not.
