Changing an active Short Text field to be optimized

I saw a discussion from 2014 that said it was not possible to make an old field optimized (for Oracle CRM on Demand).  Has this changed in the last 3 years?  I have 2 fields that I need to make optimized but is not be possible to create new and import the data.  I still have 5 left in the section I'm working in and I need the ability to search with them without being case sensitive.
