Can patch 21744410 be applied with opatch or does opatchauto need to be used

when we try to use opatch, we get the following error:

we tried the following:

#$GRID_HOME/OPatch/opatch apply ${PATCH_TOP_DIR}/21744410

also tried the sub-dir patches

also tried to put patch directories in a file and to do (opatch napply -phBaseFile /tmp/patches/patches.txt); in which case we got a different error.

""ZOP-51: The patch location is not valid for apply, because it doesn't have correct metadata, or it points to a patch directory. 
apply_patch.sh: Argument(s) Error... Patch location is not valid for apply 21744410""

seems to describe a similar problem, but we are not sure how to apply the solution to 21744410
