ebs_patch service

I had a question on the role of the ebs_patch service during the R12.2 upgrade from R12.1.3. I am aware that this is the service that is used by the Patch FS to connect to the db. My question is on getting clarity of its role during the upgrade from 12.1.3. Some info suggested that the ebs_patch service should be added and enabled throughout the upgrade process and others info I checked on the web suggested that it should be ebabled only after the online enablement process is completed. Please advice.
