Opening period in a secondary ledger

I created a secondary ledger and linked it to the primary ledger, I am using the same calendar, currency and COA as the primary ledger. When I go to open the period the Ledger is always populated with the primary ledger value and I cannot change it. Is there any other setup that I am missing? Without opening the secondary leger period I am not able to post.
