11.2 Oracle Windows Client and 11.2.0.4 Solaris Sparc64 database

We are running an 11gr2 32-bit windows client.  I have 11.2.0.3 and 11.2.0.4 databases on a Solaris Sparc64 server - running out of different ORACLE_HOME directories.  If I put each version of database into restricted session - one 11.2.0.3 and one 11.2.0.4, I am able to successfully log into the 11.2.0.3 database via sqlplus on the desktop.  The 11.2.0.4 login gives me an ORA-1034 and ORA-27101.  In both cases, I have the DBA role.  Did something change in 11.2.0.4 or do I need to do something with my client to work with both versions of RDBMS?
