intransit shipments

we have a requirement where own shipment when vendor ships it. Transit time for shipments are around 6 weeks. We can not receive these items in inventory since its not available to transact. However if we don't receive it then we are not showing our liability correctly. What is the industry standard for such requirements? How can this be handled in oracle?

Would appreciate any help/ pointers.
