Can I install same version of database software in different ORACLE_HOME on the same host?

Recently someone told me we are not allowed to install same version of database software in different ORACLE_HOME on the same host.  I was hoping to let the new DBA practice the installation, but we are not allowed.  I was not aware of it.  Doesn't Oracle app and SAP do this all the time, but may be under different owner?  Can someone confirm?
