Asset Location Key Flexfeild

We have a requirement to add 2 more segments to existing Location flexfeild 3 segment structure. Will there be impact to existing assets which were created with 3 segments only? Secondly can we change the Location flexfeild from mandatory to non mandatory? What will be the impact?
