Purpose of Pay Type Category on PDBAs

Can anyone clearly explain the purpose of the Pay Type Category on PDBAs?  What functional impact do the Pay Type Categories have in the system?  Do they drive any time entry validation or payroll calculations?  I appreciate any/all feedback.
