SID Length Naming Convention/Best Practices/Recommendations?

I can't seem to find much information on this subject.  We currently use standard 4 digit SID's but getting ready to re-host and have opportunity to rename. 

Found some info on vulnerabilities of 4 or less character SID names and some info that max usable is 8 characters.

Any standards, recommendations or documentation you can point me to?

We do want app description and lifecycle (prod, test, dev)  indicated in SID.
