Dataguard not real time recovery and standby logs.

Something that is not clear from the documentation:

Documentation says that if you do not use real time recovery standby logs are not required.

If someone can explain to me, assuming that you do not use real time recovery, what happens if you use standby logs and what happens if you do not? What is the difference?
