Default Lot Status

A customer is asking to be able update the default lot status of some 60+ items in Item Master. This attribute is controlled at the subinventory level. My question is, if we update this attribute to be controlled at the master level to update all codes at once, would we run the risk of data corruption? Also, what is the better option, a dataload or updating the table directly?

Any thoughts?
