Complete Change of Item Numbering Scheme?

Hello;

I'm curious if anyone has gone through a project (well after initial implementation) to completely change the "Item Number" already in use for every item defined in Inventory?

We implemented Inventory years ago.  We have 3 unique Inventory Orgs defined (Master, plus two transacting Orgs; each of those 2 represents/is used under a different Op. Unit.)

Our Items are "numbered" in Item Master like this:   XXXX-XX-XXX-XXXX   (13 characters (plus 3 hyphens) alpha-numeric, representing a National Stock Number / NSN).

This is the "Item Number" we reference on our PO's, SO's, AR Invoices, iStore pages, etc.

The business group is asking that we consider doing away with the NSN numbering scheme above, and instead, all items would be referenced and transacted in Oracle by a "Part Number" -- probably 10 digits in length, XXXXXXXXXX.
