Inventory Serialization

I have been asked by my Inventory Coordinator to have the ability to utilize Inventory Serialization for his big ticket items.  Is anyone else currently doing this?  What are the Pros and Cons of utilizing Serialization.

We are currently on 9.1 tools 9.1.3.
