How can we update an Inventory item template for the MRP/Planning attributes?

Is it possible to update an Inventory item template so that the Exception group on the MRP/Planning attribute tab is defaulted correctly.  If we go to the Item template, and find the one we want to update, the Planning Exception group attribute on the MRP/Planning tab is greyed out, so we cannot update it.  If we select an Org, the field then becomes available to change.  However, when we save this change, the template is only visible for that org, and we cannot update it for any other org. 

Is there a way to update this attribute default on the template?
