Customer Item Cross Reference Duplicate check

If a customer item is created with the name Y at customer level pointing to Item A, and then same customer item Y is setup at Address level pointing to item B, will this be a valid and acceptable scenario?

Is customer and customer Item combination supposed to unique? What are the possible duplicity checks at the time of customer item and customer item cross reference conversions?
