inactivate or delete an Item Manufacturer

Do we have an option to maintain item manufacturers in PeopleSoft.

we are in the process of cleaning item manufacturer to ensure old/unused manufacturers are  not linked to any active items, we also want to ensure duplicate or incorrect manufacturers will not be picked by buyers while creating or loading new items,

easy option is run a query to identify incorrect manufacturers and fix it. how can we avoid this issue for future items because we have option only to create manufacturers ( Items - Define Controls - Manufacturers ), we do not have option to inactivate or delete manufacturers.

it would be nice if we have like a business process - if we want to inactivate a manufacturer system should show active items linked to it and an option to change or clean it there.
