Duration and Starting Date to use with Variable Schedule and Deferred Revenue enabled and In Advance

Using Variable Schedule with Deferred Revenue enabled and In Advance invoicing rule.  What should we enter for Duration and Starting Date on
Invoice or Order when we are not certain of date as it is based on milestone that cannot be determined in advance?  We would like to recognize as it progress.   Your input is appreciated.
