Has anyone implemented PUM21 Scan Asset Tile? Looking for some help

We are taking PUM21 and are asking out technical team to provide us access to this new feature.  We are using Assets and Maintenance Modules.  We procure capital and it loads to the asset files then we create our preventive maintenance schedules and work orders.  We thought we could just turn this on and use the "scan of an asset label" to pull up the information on the tabs.  It turns out that since we do not add assets to Physical Inventory this will not work.  This does not make sense to us.  Are we missing a configuration or something?
