Modifying Existing Work Order DFF

Hi,

What could be impacts, if we change the existing work order DFF from non value set related to value set based field  ???? ( Validation Type : Table. List will show the values from a custom table).

We would like to use the existing work order DFF field, as system is not allowing more than 15 DFF. So could some one suggest on this.

Note: Currently few records are having information in the existing work order DFF field (work order statuses are in closed).
