12.2.0.1 afd_configure gives "ASMCMD-9520: AFD is not 'supported'"

I'm installing ASM 12.2.0.1 in a GI Standalone (Oracle Restart) environment on RHEL 7 with a kernel patched to 3.10.0-693. Currently, I'm attempting to configure ASMFD per these instructions from the 12.2 ASM Admin Guide and running into problem at step 3:

3. As root, configure Oracle ASMFD using the following command:

# $ORACLE_HOME/bin/asmcmd afd_configure

This fails with 

[root@db04:/u01/app/oracle/product/12.2.0/grid]# bin/crsctl stop has -fCRS-2791: Starting shutdown of Oracle High Availability Services-managed resources on 'db04'CRS-2673: Attempting to stop 'ora.LISTENER.lsnr' on 'db04'CRS-2677: Stop of 'ora.LISTENER.lsnr' on 'db04' succeeded
