Maximum order XML Size or order items that could be added to an order

Dear Experts,

We are using eCommunication application for Telecom. Please advise what is the maximum size of order xml or order items that could  be added to an order.

We would have orders of 5000 to more than 10,000 order items. Initial analysis from our end was > 1000 order items application was getting crashed in sync mode of order submit.

Order did not reach AIA in ssynch mode of order submit. Please suggest if any changes required from Scalability perspective to handle such large orders.
