Goldengate Microservices : is this really necessary ?

What is the advantage to installing Goldengate Microservices ?

Is this mandatory  or can we install/configure goldengate in the traditional way ?

Can we install the MS after we have a 'manual' GG install running ?

Also  where can we get more detailed explanations  of the different MS components ?  The docs  do not give so much of use.
