Difference between Interface tables ?

Hi SCM Gurus,

Can you explain the difference between interface tables

(1) RCV_LOTS_INTERFACE     &  MTL_TRANSACTION_LOTS_INTERFACE

(2) RCV_SERIALS_INTERFACE  &  MTL_SERIAL_NUMBER_INTERFACE

Difference between base tables ?

(1) RCV_LOT_TRANSACTIONS     &  MTL_LOT_NUMBERS

(2) RCV_SERIAL_TRANSACTIONS  &  MTL_SERIAL_NUMBERS

In which scenarios these interfaces are used ?
