Form Control Modes

When we right click on a form control, a popup menu window shows up and the second item on the list is "Modes". when it is selected, a window displays Mode1, Mode2 and Mode3. Each has option of enabled and hidden. Could some one please explain what these modes are and how to use them and in the run time which SV or SL values holes the current mode.
