Alternate option than FTP for transferring marketing files

We are using FTP as transport mechanism for marketing files in "Marketing Wave Launch" workflow. Our current FTP delivery is not secure and hence we have been asked to use alternate delivery mechanism. We have few queries related to the same:

1. Can we modify Marketing Wave Launch workflow and use some custom Business service (with clib functions) to extract the files instead of FTP?
2. Is their an option to use secure FTP instead of FTP?
3. If we use email as the method, does it send the file as an attachment?
