Fast Formula output error

Cause:        the data type of an output from the formula MEDICAL AID does not match the Unit Of Measure of the Input Value name Option.  In the element input values, Option is defined as Character.

I am getting the above error when running a formula in a Quickpay - the formula verifies and saves but this error appears at runtime.  What is puzzling me is that Option is an input value but not an output value.  it is used to find the contribution value in a table.  It does not return any values to the direct element or the indirect elements.
