Shutdown of one node in 3 node RAC standby

Hi,

Have 11.2.0.4 , 3 node RAC Prim with 3 node RAC stndby.

Instance 3 on RAC standby is set to the PreferredApplyInstance.

Instance 3 is the current apply instance.

Real Time Query is ON.

If we shutdown one of the non apply instances of the RAC standby  for example node 1, then we start seeing the Transport lag and Apply lag increasing. Why is this?

I would think if node 3 was the apply node then shutting down one of the other nodes in the RAC standby would not affect the redo stream, but this seams not to be the case.

Could you please explain this behaviour?
