ARM application was down- E drive out of space

We are using Hyperion ARM 11.1.2.3.501. Hyperion ARM was failed to login on last week and the issue was resolved once we deleted some 2GB old ARM log flies from outbox>logs located in E drive followed by a service restart. we have identified that E drive was full and would like to understand how out of space of a drive leads to Application fail. Please provide your thoughts
