How does Essbase Transaction Logging and Transaction Log replay work?

I am currently setting up my essbase server so that we can attain near zero data lose. We currently perform daily cold backups of all Essbase apps but would like to integrate transaction logging and replay to attain zero data lose for BSO applications. What I've read the backup and recover guide several times but I do not understand how the transaction log and the transaction log replay work? Do they go hand in hand? Do I need to enable both features? What do I get if I only enable one of the features? I need some more detail surround
