Is It Necessary to Create and Maintain Editioning Views in R12.2?

We do not plan on deploying custom changes using the online method nor do we plan on ever deploying during an online patch cycle.  So is it necessary to create and maintain editioning views for custom tables?  It seems like it would add risk and provide zero benefit.
