Requirement for Oracle ASM for database installation

I am about to put request for a new server ready for database installation using ASM storage management.

My understanding is ASM will be using raw disk, not formatted.

But I will need to Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server before using configuring ASM disk groups.

My concern is where do I install the Grid Infrastructure software if the entire server is not formatted.

I will need formatted storage location like /u01/app/grid_home to download and install the software.

Any help explaining will be appreciated.

Our current environment is Solaris 10/11
