The "-backup" parameter for scanDomain utility

As we can see from help doc of scanDomain utility, there is a optional parameter "-backup".

  -backup     Backup database files before repairing them. Can not be     used with detectDataLoss or -detectCorruption.

Questions:

1) what does backup file look like? At the same db path with different suffix?

2) what and how can we do with it?

It's appreciate for any response.
