Upgrading from 11.1.0.7 to 12.2.0.1

Hi

  My customer plans to upgrade a number of databases from Oracle version 11.1.0.7 to version 12.2.0.1 (non-CDB). All the documentation and upgrade guides which I have seen recommend upgrading from 11.1.0.7 to 11.2.0.4, then upgrading from 11.2.0.4 to 12.2.0.1 - however it would also appear to be possible to achieve the same thing by upgrading from 11.1.0.7 to 12.1.0.2, then from 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1. Is there any technical (or other) reason why the 11.1.0.7 - 11.2.0.4 - 12.2.0.1 approach is recommended in preference to 11.1.0.7 - 12.1.0.2 - 12.2.0.1?

I would be grateful for any thoughts which you may have.
