Inactive kit components pulling on sales orders

We have a kit item which has a BOM that contains its components.  The components were end dated on the BOM back in December 2015, and made inactive in Item Master as well.  Yet, when we add this kit item to a sales order, there are a few of these inactive/end dated items that are pulling on the sales order.  I have been unable to find a document on support to help me figure this issue out.  Can someone help me out?  This is causing issues.
