Need a drop down for a cell in the excel report generated from BIP

We have a requirement to generate the excel report and sent that in email to customer and customer will edit status on the template and send it back to us.

We are able to create the xls template and mapping the BIP fields. But after mapping the fields the dropdown on the status cell on the template is not working. But the same is working with xlsx template, but BIP is accepting only xls template.

Could you please help us out in fixing this.
