Can FA_ASSET_DESC_PUB.update_desc be used to update attributes to null from not null

I tried updating the not null attributes of an asset (DFF) to null using API but it did not update it using API FA_ASSET_DESC_PUB.update_desc. It works the other way round, i.e. updating NULL values of a DFF to not null values.
