_MGMTDB Best Practices in Regards to Archivelogs

Every couple of months I receive a disk space alert from one of my RAC nodes due to archivelogs filling up the grid_home\RDMS directory with gigs of data. I am wondering what the best practice is for managing this.

First off why is the _MGMTDB even in archive mode?

Is it recommended that a RMAN backup strategy be in place for this database?

Best practices indicate not to add to Cloud Control monitoring which we use to manage all of our backup jobs, would we disregard that or should we be running RMAN backups through BAT files?
