Remove Link/Requirement Between UDC and Cat Code

In Job Master (P51006) I want to modify a Cat Code so it can accept 10 character string - rather than select from a list of UDC values.  My issue is for each business unit the Cat Code could be a unique value so it is cumbersome populating the UDC.  If I don't populate the UDC I get the error 018A, " not found in User Defined Code"

There are other places in JD Edwards where rather than populate UDC just would want to type in Cat Code field.  I feel like this there is a simple process I missing to remove this link?
