Essbase as a datasource and needing to pull level 0 data

Hi folks, long time follower, first time poster.  Did search the community and elsewhere before posting to no avail.  We have a very tabular report we are trying to generate in BIP (to replace a FR report).  One of the requirements to to select a parent member have have the report only return the level 0 of the selected member.  Found this article, https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28280_01/bi.1111/e22258/create_data_sets.htm#BIPDM404  .  Question for the group before going down that rabbit hole, is that the right approach or are there any other recommendations or solutions that you all can share and elaborate on?
