Extremly slow response times when executing mailq on Soalris 10

I have a pair of VM's running Solaris 10 (SunOS slclrv3991 5.10 Generic_147441-01 i86pc i386 i86pc) and they are being used a relay server. They have been operational for more than 5 years and for the first time, I am experiencing performance issues which I believe is in the bowels of the OS.

Being it a relay server, checking mailq is one of the basic mundane checks. This is now taking extremely long time to render the queue data no matter what the number of emails in the queue are.

Truss shows the below:

root@slclrv3991:~# truss -d mailq

Base time stamp:

Howdy, Stranger!
