Can we open Inventory periods by skipping (never opening &closing) previous periods

Hi

WE had inventory module setup but we were NOT using inventory module.

We are now going to use inventory module to record transactions, I was going to open March 2018 as first Inventory period but I noticed that March & April 2006 were opened and closed.

So, as from 2006 till now inventory period statuses are FUTURE.

I want to know what is the best way to proceed.

Can I just open March 2018 and start recording transactions by skipping previous periods with status Future?

Or do i have to open and then close all inventory periods until i reach 2018.
