Mass update of "Control Group" flag in Cycle Count Items form (INVADCYC)

We have a request from one of our users requesting a mass update of the "Control Group" flag in the Cycle Count Items Screen.  We currently use an API to load the items to the cycle count and found that there is no column in the record type for control_group_flag in the INV_ABC_ASSIGNMENTS_PUB.  Can we just perform an update on the table (MTL_CYCLE_COUNT_ITEMS)?  Has anyone done this?  Were there any problems?
