Mass Update/Cleaning of Master Items Using WEB ADI

I have a requirement to clean up data in the Master Items/Material Transactions Table. I want to capitalise the words, remove hyphens, commas and other special characters (&%) etc. I am thinking of using Web ADI to mass update/clean and I am wondering how could I do it? I want to extract (download) the  Master Items/Material Transactions Table and then update it using Excel and then upload it back into the database where the changes will hopefully propagate to all the effected tables. Can this be done an if so how could it happen?
