Why xdf cannot apply column changes ?

Hello,

While deploying custom object changes via xdf for table. If we add new column to table, these changes are reflected directly when the change is moved via xdf.

But if we alter an existing column lets say change the length, we have to create a new revision of the column#1, and write FCET to migrate these changes.

What is the basic reason behind this, any pointers ?
