Install 12c on a current 11g host

Hello,

I have an AIX server with Oracle 11.2.0.4 running with several instances defined.  They use ASM, RMAN with a catalog database and EM Grid Console.  I need to install Oracle 12.1.0.2 in a new oracle home.  Do I need to upgrade the ASM environment before running the 12c runInstall process?  If so, how will that effect the 11g instances / databases?
