Help modifying Approvers in SSHR

I am trying to configure the approvers for Termination in SSHR. Out of the box this action requires approval from everyone in the supervisory tree (up to 10). We want the requesting manager to be able to approve and then have notifications sent to his supervisor, but not require any approval beyond the requester (manager). I could use some help, I can't find any documents that that have been of any help so far.
