Identifying an Customer type Address Book ID as a parent?

We want to use the Address Book parent/child relationships.  However, in the Address Book record we want to identify specific AB records as a "parents" using a CatCode field (rather than a different AB search Type).  We are hoping this will allow us to add data validation and restrict assignment of a Customer Record to the wrong level of a contract.  Is this a good idea?  Is there a best practice for doing this in JDE EnterpriseOne?
